Fool’s Gold

Summary

Fool’s Gold is a two-player platformer game where the player that survives the longest or reaches the goal (cherry) wins. One of the features is speed is affected by the player number of hearts. Unfortunately, there is not story implemented as the focus was directed towards mechanics and the level design.

This game still has many bugs and is not in a polished or stable state.

User Testing

Multiple people have tested the game and have helped improve the game. A list of pros and cons have been made from all the people testing Fool’s Gold. The testing took place in class time and in the main classroom we are working in. The list is below:

Zac

  • Pros
    • Easy to learn
    • Difficult, for the first bit
  • Cons
    • Simple gameplay
    • Lack of long-term interest
    • No replay ability
    • Physics system needs work, collision (you go to the top of blocks when above 60% of the block).
    • Jumping is odd
    • No Random Generation
    • No Wall climbing, Lack of free movement
    • No indication of what ability you unlock
    • No growth in difficulty
    • Easier when achieving double jump
    • More indication When injured/hurt (make player Flash Red)
    • Abilities should not be bought
    • lack of interest
    • Make abilities buy able on the side of the screen and make it so you can use it for a certain amount of time
    • Make a fire ring around the side to tell the user not to go there
    • More visual indication

Sam

  • Pros
    • movement is smooth as
    • u liked that the lava looked like grass
  • Cons
  • Change Colour of green
  • Change colour of p1 to blue and p2 to red
  • I don’t get the tokens
  • lava sucks
  • round the squares on the player

Josiah & Jimmy

  • Pros
    • They enjoyed the game and played for over 20 minutes out of their own will.
  • Cons
    • Can’t Reach the end as it either went backwards or too fast.

Josiah’s and Jimmy’s compliment was surprising as it was the first proper compliment gained while making the game, without asking for one. The user testing protocol that was used is in the folder containing this document. Zac and Sam were the only people who were given the protocol too as I forgot to give Josiah and Jimmy one.

Reflection

While making the game problems and proud moments appeared throughout. The proudest moment received in the making of the game was creating something that people really enjoyed. Along with playing my own game. Some of the coding was quite satisfying on which I was proud of. There were many annoying and frustrating problems that accoutred in the making as well. For instance, I heavily disliked the movement of the characters as it felt odd, but I didn’t know how to better implement it. An object that changes its sprite was quite the nightmare to code along with making the elevator speed at an ok rate. The game has created a valuable experience to me in problem solving and organising a work schedule. For others it has provided enjoyment and frustration.

The next time I create a game I plan to make sure I have greater control over the events and objects in the game. As well as organising the items in the game better to get less overwhelmed.

There were many websites used in the making of the game, a majority are listed below:
