Monster Hunter World Review

Monster Hunter World is an action-RPG game released on 26th January 2018, developed and published by Capcom. Monster Hunter World is the tenth game from this franchise. Released for Xbox One and Play station 4 in January 2018 and later PC in August 2018.

Gameplay

The gameplay in Monster Hunter World is the same as the previous title. Players get to choose their quest and go on to finish it. As the name of the game said, this game is about hunting monsters. From the smallest one to the largest and most dangerous one. The game starts off slowly and is easy to let the players get used to the game first. As they complete more quests, the difficulty will slowly increase to make the game more challenging. Like in the Soul games, where one or two is all it takes to kill the players, in this game it is not much different. Players must be careful and pay attention to every attack the monsters throw at them to not die. Also, you can’t choose a difficulty in this game. Monster Hunter World came with a total of 14 different weapons to choose from. All have their unique mechanics and playstyle.

Graphic

Monster Hunter World is considered the most beautiful in the franchise because every previous Monster Hunter game was designed to play on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo DS, but Monster Hunter World is the first in the series to get imported to Xbox, Play station and PC. That means the developer doesn’t have to worried about the hardware of the Nintendo Switch or DS. They use Unreal Engine five to develop this game. Unreal Engine five is known for its beautiful graphics. Every particle and effect, such as lightning, fire, water or ice are all detailed. The texture is also highly detailed. The optimization in this game is so polished, even with a low-end computer you can still enjoy this game.

Sound

The sound design in this game is awesome. You can feel every hit of the weapons from the sound in the game. What I like the most is music. Every monster has their own theme song which helps bring up the mood of the fight. After every hunt, players can carve the monster to collect the material. The material are then used to craft into weapons or armours. The material drops are randomized, which means that players have to hunt the monster multiple times before they get enough material to craft an item. There is decoration system. It allows players to put a gem in their armour or weapons to get a special skill that helps the players to play more efficiently.

Control

Most players decided to use the controller rather than keyboard and mouse. Mouse and keyboard can be harder to control the character efficiently, but with a little change in the setting it can work as good as the controller. I personally play with mouse and keyboard because I’m not used to playing with controller. It took me some time to figure the setting that works for me, but once I got all the setting right, I can play more smoothly.

Replayability

Replayability is the core part of this game. Players are required to hunt the same monster multiple times in order to craft a weapon or armour. It goes on a loop. Players hunt the monster to craft an item then they found a new monster and have to hunt them over and over again to get the material to craft new item.

On 6th September 2019, Capcom released the DLC called Monster hunter world: iceborne which adds a ton of new content to the game. More monsters. Greater difficulty. There is also a weekly boss for players to fight. Even at the endgame, players still have a lot of things to do. The guiding land for example, is the combination of all the maps in the game. Players can level up certain areas in the guiding land to get a specific material from that area. There is a special version of the monster that can appear in the guiding land called a tempered monster. Tempered monsters are basically the harder version of the original monster. They drop a special material which can only be found on guiding land, in a specific area and level. The material can be used to upgrade your weapon, and it takes a lot of time to get only just one upgrade. Even me who have more than 500 hours in the game, I only have around three to four upgrades on the weapons. Luckily, the upgrade and be switched around between weapons.

Conclusion

While this game might take quite some time to get used to it, once you do, you can’t stop playing it. Something in this game makes you crave for more. The intense fights with the monsters, the farming and grinding, the graphics and the music. All worked together to create this masterpiece. Most people consider Monster Hunter World to be one of the best RPG games in these modern days and I can’t agree more. I’ve always wanted to play this game ever since I saw the trailer in 2017. When I got my hands on it, I couldn’t stop playing it. It is a challenging and unique game. I’ll give it a 9.6/10. I would give it a 10, but the drop rate of the material in this game and the difficulty of the monsters can be frustrating sometimes.
