School Logo Cookie Cutter

Project Description

At the start, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do for my project. I was pretty worn out of video game making, and really enjoyed the process of 3d printing. That’s when sue emailed to ask if a student was able to 3d print a cookie cutter in the shape of the school logo. Sue wanted to make cookies as a thank you gift for some “employers who have had our kids for work placement.”. So, I took the job

Sketches

This is the image of the logo Sue gave me. It’s been slightly edited from the original school logo to be bigger and more practical as a cookie cutter. I will be using a new program that I haven’t used before. Fusion 360. I’m able to draw out the shape I need, using a pen similar to the pen tool used in illustrator, then increase the wall width and create the shape I need. Then I must take into account the measurements to create some of the lines as indents and not a straight cut. Such as the line in the middle and the indents in the middle of the leaves.

User Testing

Every time I printed a cookie cutter, Sue would burrow it to test it on a live batch of cookie dough. To test if the height of the walls were practical, the indents were high enough and the bridges to connect the indents didn’t indent into the cookie dough.

Sue said my first cutter was too short, making it hard to lift out of the flatten dough. it had too many small cervices for cookie dough to get stuck in. So, I pulled the walls up a cm taller, and fixed the area where the cookie dough was getting stuck, making the area bigger.

The next cookie cutter height was perfect. The area where the dough was getting caught needed a side of the wall lowed, so the cookie didn’t cut off. And the wall where the cookie cuts out into a triangle needed lowering too. But this cookie cutter was pretty much perfect

The last cookie cutter was perfect. Except for the fact that it was backwards. It was mirrored of the opposite image. So, all I need to do it flip it in Fusion and then print it out. And done.

Evaluation

This was my first time creating a cookie cutter and using Fusion 360. And I think I did a pretty good job at both. I really like 3d printing and find it a lot of fun, and I like baking so I’m glad I was able to design something for a hobby I enjoy, I think it gave me more motivation to make it. The problems I faced were just using Fusion 360. There were times where things didn’t work, and I was unable to figure out why. There were not many videos on the program, and if there were it was a 28-minute-long tutorial. I’m not sure what I would do differently next time. I think I did everything I needed to do. I would probably add a border to it, but ill probably do that when I print it out the 4th time.
